Android Donut alpha released- facts so far
Wow what a weekend, it has been in the android world. On Friday night, Google decided to let loose some of the new features that they were planning for the next release of android onto developers. (Thanks to Android Phone Fans for breaking the news)
The main features listed were
- multitouch ( this has been denied by Google)
- Gesture controls
- CDMA support
- Search system wide
- WPA2 enterprise
- VPN support
- Updated camera
- Updated UI and animations
- Compatibility Mode
- Credential storage
- Accessibility option
- Speech synthesizer controls
- New power control and text widgets
Google have also said that the new release (Codename Donut) will not be Android 2.0 which indicates it is only a minor release.
Interesting points to note:
- CDMA is not a technology used in the UK however it is used by Sprint, the USA mobile carrier, who has gone on record of releasing an Android phone by September 2009. This firmly pushes the date for the donut release to being at least 2 months away.
- A key aspect to note is the inclusion of WPAE and VPN support which is the first clear indication that Android is going after the business market.
- Therefore the minimum that we can expect is Microsoft Exchange support and preferably Google Docs integration and Spellcheck.
All of the above features are clearly required by even the most basic small business- the question is just how much of it can Google deliver?
Here are some screenshots of the new release:

[...] He says that at the moment the iphone Os is better than android and acknowledges the huge potential that Android has. This is vast simplification of the debate, and handsets like the HTC Hero are making this argument seem weaker by the day. He also says that it needs to be able to compete with the Iphone, which I agree with him a 100%. Android needs to get better and it is. Donut is being released in the next few months with some of the goodies that I mentioned in my Android donut news post. [...]

When will bluetooth send/receive files will be implemented???
I would also like to see improved bluetooth support in android. There is a list somewhere of all the bluetooth profiles that the HTC Hero supports. If I recall, bluetooth file transfer was in there- so there is hope that it will come out sooner rather than later!
