Manually Update to 1.6 Donut on T-mobile g1 or Vodafone Magic
Warning: This should be attempted by those who are severely impatient (like me!) most likely you will receive the update without any further action, its just a matter of time. (From what has been reported, even if you have unlocked your phone)
ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE BACKED UP YOUR DATA and YOU LIKE TO TAKE RISKS!
Right now to the installation:
1. Download the latest Android 1.6 update for UK t-mobile g1 or the update for the Vodafone Magic 1.6 Update
2. Copy the file onto your Micro –SD card by mounting your phone onto your pc.( Plug it into your computer and click the mount USB option on the top of the screen)
3. In case you have changed its name when you downloaded it, rename the file to update.zip and wait a minute or two before you unplug.
4. Turn off the handheld and when you power it back up press and hold the home key until you see a warning logo appear.
(If you see the google android logo, then you need to power it down and try again.)
5. Press Alt-L on the keyboard ( edit: on the HTC Magic hold home again press the power button)
6. Follow onscreen prompt to press Alt-s to apply the update ( edit: or on the HTC Magic use the trackball to select the update!)
7. Leave it alone- it takes a long time- it will reboot when it is good and ready.
Enjoy!

i have been trying to update my phone for ages now, my phone keeps showing me this message
E:can’t open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)
please someone help!!!!
Did you copy the file into the root of your sdcard? did you rename the file?
You should only try and update from the latest Cupcake release- otherwise it doesn’t work!
Does not work, I get an error message.
What’s the error message?
Trying it out now… currently says “installing update”. Fingers crossed!
Worked a treat. Ta Android bloke!
Hi…I am extremely impatient!! Lol
only problem is I havnt rooted my G1, will I still ne able to update this way? I know when cupcake came out you could manually update on unroofed handsets, just didn’t want to do it if I need root access, cheers!
You don’t need to root your phone to do this. This method is for unrooted phones!
Just did it and it worked like a charm! Cheers! Didnt take too long and with linda file manager i didnt even switch on my pc! Donuts lookin good so far!
does this work on the HTC Magic? has anyone tried it on that? as i want to update mine as it is an unlocked Polish version from Orange
Works fine on htc Magic! If you are nervous to try it out, then wait a while longer. I am not sure that Polish version is the same as the UK one though!
Hi Android UK,
Well i tried the update but it didn’t work it, i keep getting an error message
Hi,
Just tried the update on my G1 which is currently running a pitiful RC7 OS and got this error message:
E:failure at line 2:
assert file_contains(“SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:1.5/CRC37?150879:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys”) == “true” II file_cotains(“SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:Installation Aborted
What does that mean?
Appreciate your help
You are trying to go from CRC1(1.5) -> DRC92 (1.6).
There was an intermidiary patch released.
You need to go: CRC1 ->CRC37 ->DRC92.
Search google for: signed-kila_eu-CRC37-from-CRC1.404fe17f
How do you do this on the Magic? I get to the warning sign but no keyboard to press Alt-L… any ideas?
Press the home button again!
still not working, phone is completely unresponsive when that warning sign is up… Does it work from Cupcake 1.5? Guess I’ll just have to wait until vodafone finally release this update officially.
I have updated the post- you need to push home and power when you see the warning sign. I might split this into two posts as its a bit confusing. What do you all think? Let me know if this works as this is the standard manual update for android phones with no keyboard.
Yeah that worked, much easier to follow now. Thanks a lot man. Just applying the update. I’ll update if something goes wrong, fingers crossed though!
Got the same message as Etinne. What’s next?
Hey Androidbloke!
Thanks so much for providing such a useful resource. It’s really helping me get into the swing of Android on my newly acquired G1.
I do have a question….I was trying to update to Donut 1.6 today and received a long error message which I shared in the comments above.. I figured i’d try 1.5 Cupcake instead and when I found the relevant post, you said I needed to be on RC9 or higher. I’m presently on RC7 (the phone is boxfresh but a year old), could this be the problem?
If it is, where can I get an RC9 update from?
Again, thanks for taking the time to help those less fortunate than yourself
Hi Ettiene, click on 1.5 in my tag links on the right and see if you can follow the manual update to 1.5 (tell me if that works ok)
Hi Android Uk. Got an unmoded G1 with firmware version 1.5, Baseband Version 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.261, Kernel Version 2.6.27-00393-g6607056 san@sandroid#1 with Build number CRB43.
Folowed your instructions to update but keep getting ‘E:failure at line 2:
assert file_contains(”SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:1.5/CRC37?150879:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys”) == “true” II file_cotains(”SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:Installation Aborted’. What are my doing wrong here? Thanks.
Hi, I have tried this method with the G2 (HTC Hero) but get the
authentification error and it says it does not have the correct signature.
Is this because i have downloaded the wrong update.zip file? I have tried a couple of different ones now but with no luck, my build number is 2.73.110.26 CL#69351.
It is an unrooted G2 on the UK T mobile network
Thanks for the help
Hi.
The G2 won’t work with this update. I am sure that htc will follow soon with an update for the g2 and htc hero however I think it is more likely that you will be getting the upgrade to the forthcoming android 2.0 instead!
Thanks, it’s taken me a fortnight to find out that that these updates aren’t for the G2. The only upgrade I was really after was the improved Market (there have been lots of apps i haven’t been able to find on there since i did the ROM upgrade).
Do you have any idea when Eclair will be released? Is there any way to get Donut on a G2?
Thanks
Good news is that eclair was delivered to developers today, so I think it should be a week or two before it comes through. ( although perhaps a bit longer for HTC to work in their customizations)
Glad I could help out- and personally I would wait for Android 2 instead of shoehorning 1.6 onto your phone. The android market revamp is still far short of what it should be
Thanks for the links android bloke but unfortunately, both files have been removed from the server….
Is there anything left I can do? I can’t find old OS versions anywhere (all the links seem to have expired) and neither 1.5 or 1.6 will update on my handset. They both produce the same error message
I just checked the link and they both are working?
I have Firmware V 1.5 CRB17 there is anything i can do to update ?

Hi,
Same issue. Any feedback on this from Android UK?
hi i have a uk build g1with build number crc1. when i try to do the update i get …‘E:failure at line 2:
assert file_contains(”SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:1.5/CRC37?150879:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys”) == “true” II file_cotains(”SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:Installation Aborted
All, I am going to do a post with all the firmware versions as I think thats where everyone is getting confused.
On the vodafone magic with an o2 sim card I get (in yellow)
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command
Install from sdcard
Finding update package…………
Opening update package……..
Verifying update package……..
Installing update…….
Installation aborted.
The update does not work but any help appreciated. There may also be other issues as for some unknown reason a couple of days ago the phone stopped making a connection to the o2 web. I have phoned o2 who don’t support the magic but they say there should be no problem with my settings which in any event have worked fine for a couple of months. I thought the update may correct this.
Hi, I am on o2 as well.
try the settings I used for my phone : http://androidbloke.co.uk/setting-up-your-android-phone-using-o2-2/
i bought HTC Magic from Vodafone Egypt; will this update work with me.
and can i backup my original version in case i need it??
Hiya,
i was just wondering would this work for someone in Australia locked to the 3 network ? I have a HTC Magic, firmware 1.5. I’m pretty new at all of this stuff so forgive me if it’s a stupid question also but what is the CRB number people are talking about ? I can’t seem to find any number like that in my phone settings.
Thanks!
hey,
just thought it might be handy for people who are upgrading from CRC24 like i was, you can find the right build at
http://android.clients.google.com/updates/vfpioneer/signed-vfpioneer-DRC92-from-CRC24.75416ede.zip
Thanks for the tutorial. I haven’t tried it yet but i have some questions regarding this.
1. Is this suitable for the 32A version of the HTC Magic (vodafone) ?
2. In case this doesn’t work , for example if i get installation aborted bla bla, will i get the 1.5 back working like nothing happened ? (excepting the loss of personal data)
Thank you for your time and please excuse my english as i am not a native speaker
Does this work in australia?
Hi, I just got a G1 in Nigeria. I’m not sure if it’s a UK or a US model. Should I try it out anyways?? And if i try out this update, will my G1 get locked up again?
Also, is it possible to simply copy the update file directly onto the SD card? My pc isn’t recognizing my G1, so I wanna simply format the card, and copy the file straight onto it via card reader on the pc. Would that give me any problems???
Ok i managed to fix it all i needed to do was put in the voadfone APN and everything worked
Hey im from australia and i need to reset the firmware cuz it wont let me get past the google mail sign in becuz it wont connect to the service. I did it all but when i click apply sdcard:update.zip it goes
“finding updatepackage….
opening update package….
verifying update package…
E:no signature (294 files)
E: verification failed
Installation aborted.”
