Android 1.6 rolls out to the masses despite few bug reports

Submitted by on October 22, 2009 – 2:10 pm6 Comments

donut.pngThe mass rollout of Android 1.6 continued in full swing this week, despite reports of bugs from US users who have had the update for a few weeks already.
Unlike the previous 1.5 rollout, it seems that the engineers have elected to take a more cautious tone when it comes to pushing out the update with only a few confirmed users receiving it in the past few days.

There may be a method to their madness as
1. Android marketshare is now quite significant and any major showstoppers would mean a lot of angry customers, a lot of hassle to push out a fix and potentially a large compensation bill.
2. Any potential bugs can create bad press for the burgeoning android platform and can severely impact handset sales. Let’s face it there is nothing like a bad bug to trigger a backlash.

Having said that I am happy to report that Android 1.6 is working wonderfully on my G1. I am enjoying the new improved quick search box, the fact my gmail now has a confirmation button for when I accidentally press the discard button and I am delighted by the new improved android market. ( for a full list of features see my previous post)

I would be interested in hearing updates from other users? How is your experience with Android 1.6?

I received my lovely chocolate covered Donut on Monday morning. Easy and quick install, thanks Google. Does everybody know that if you go into widgets, there is a power widget for the home screen, it has instant on/off for bluetooth, gps, wifi, data sync and screen brightness !! Fantastic. It also speeded my phone up !! A lot.. I have a T-mobile G1.

Still waiting here in sunny Staines! I have just called T-Mobile UK and the friendly (but rather squeaky, American) agent advised me that it was not being sent at the moment but would be some time this year!

Got my update on Monday morning (T-Mobile G1). Initially I had some show-stopping problems (for me); Donut broke too many applications.

After performing a factory reset AND wiping my SDCard it started to behave itself. A subsequent update to Voice Search fixed that too and now it’s going very well; performance feels smoother, (the lagginess I’d got used to and expected is no longer there), also battery life seems to be better.

No update showing on my son’s G2 yet though.

Got mine just now thanks to the manual update on here! Loving it so far…especially the power manager widget! Everythings working perfectly, the only problem was a force code on my touch input (htc_ime.apk) which is my favourite thing ever…but a quick google search for “htc_ime.apk 1.6″ found me an updated version so i’m 100% happy!

Well. After being told yesterday by T-Mobile that the update was not being sent and that it should happen some time this year, it arrived this morning! :-) Great additional features (the battery monitor is very useful) and it does seem less laggy.

Good Call on battery montor. It also seems a bit snappier for me too. I have a funny thing with the internet occasionally stalling, however I am not sure if its a network issue- as it happens on my other mobile too.
