Android Eclair gets served! G1 might miss out the feast.
Just as we were getting indigestion from our fresh serving of Android Donut, Google goes and throws a curve ball in the shape of a fresh new release of Android 2.0 (aka Eclair!)
They have released a fresh new movie and some highlights including:
- Centralised contacts- Have one address book sourced from your gmail, facebook, myspace (and linked in? hint hint)
- Centralised Mailbox- Have all your messages coming into one place ( as seen on Motorola blur software, and HTC Sense UI )
- Multitouch, Multitouch, Multitouch- Look forward to pinching an android phone screen near you!
- Exchange Support- Google is putting Android to work and at the same time targeting Blackberry’s market share
- New UI- Looking smart there Android
- Upgraded Calendar- ( edit: Looks like its catching up with Google mobile functionality)
- Upgraded Bluetooth- Peer 2 Peer Gaming and data share is coming to a phone near you.
Here is Google’s list of all the new features in Eclair
The one major drawback is that according to the size of the file, it looks like the Tmobile G1, will not be able to stomach this bit of Eclaire as it is too large for the partition.
I hope that Google will find a solution to this, as otherwise there will be a lot of upset G1 fans. My thoughts are that they can either:
- come up with a desktop updater to safely backup and repartition the G1
- or even use something like Sprite Backup(recently showcased) to backup content to the sd card and then restore it once the disk is repartitioned.
Come on Google don’t let us down!
Now its just a race to see who will bring out the first Android 2 release handset (after the modders do it first) My thoughts are the HTC Hero will be the first, closely followed by Motorola’s new phone which I am sure we will have an announcement imminently about.
Its getting really interesting everyone- hang on for the ride!

We’ve heard the “G1 is too small for the updates” argument before. Donut was too big, and yet G1ers still got that. Let’s wait and see if Google/T-Mo actually say anything one way or the other before we start another panic/rage, ok?
Multi touch would be a big boon, especially on webpages, I find the in/out buttons a little random at times.
I would love to have multi-touch- it is the one compelling UI thing that really makes the Iphone so usable. Being able to grasp things is a very natural way for the brain to comprehend something.
My wife to be has an iPhone so we’ve been doing a lot of contrast and compare over the past few days
My wife also has an Iphone, and I will consider the Google phone perfect the day she asks to use it without complaining. So far 1.5 and 1.6 is a failure on the test- I am hoping 2.0 will fair better.
now, i am suffering from bad indigestion and sometimes it is painful too.~-;
