Motorola updates its android update plan- delays for UK
Motorola seem to be taking a leaf out of British Rail’s playbook and it looks like its all delays delays delays. Moto’s customer service scores full points for keeping people up to date- however hopefully they will be a bit more conservative with their future scheduling. ( it pays to be early and surprise people) Like the train system -Europe’s Milestone users have had their updates right on time this month and are already enjoying the Android 2.1 goodness. Thanks to “network issues” looks like us Brits will have to hold of for next week for it to hit handsets.
This update was originally delayed from Quarter 1 2010 and I personally hope that Motorola is holding off the update a few more days just to knock out these last remaining bugs that some Euro Milestone users reported, in order to give its user base a better experience. ![]()
The Motorola Milestone ( Motorola Droid in USA) is already one of my favourite telephones on Android, being one of the few to sport a full hardware keyboard. With the new android 2.1 update- users are expecting a raft of fixes and tweaks including the live wallpapers feature- ( which has been such a hit with Google Nexus One and HTC Desire users.
Moto has released a full list of upgrades that it plans to roll out- I am disappointed to see the Motorola Dext languishing as“Upgrade under evaluation” The longer Android dext users have to wait, the less likely it is that feature apps will run on the handset and the more upset consumers Moto will have on its hand. If I worked for Moto right now- I would personally look to either merge cliq and dext source code and take advantage of the localisation feature ( already built into Android!) or secondly I would release an optional non motoblur update for the DEXT phone software until such time as the full update comes out. ![]()
Android is meant to be Motorola’s coming out party and it would be a sad shame if they allow a slow development cycle of the awesome Motoblur customization to lose them goodwill. Motoblur is in my opinion- one of the strongest implementations for a social phone and really shows promise however seems to have run out of steam when compared to HTC sense. Lots of people are very affectionate about the Dext and I personally think that Motorola are missing a trick by holding back the at least a partial software updates.
With Htc expected to roll out Android 2.1 to its Hero handsets in the next 3 weeks and other handsets following suit, its seems that the 1.5 version line is reaching the end of its shelf life. and with Google’s recently released updated software platform chart how many developers are going to support a legacy version Android when 2/3rds of the market ( and growing!) has moved on. I would hate to see a phone as powerful and potentially awesome as the DEXT go into the bargain bin.
