The android developer team released its latest breakdown of the android ecosystem yesterday. Despite Android being one operating system, there are currently several versions in the market based on what manufacturers choose to install on their handsets. Microsoft follows the same model with at any one time windows XP, windows vista and windows 7 being sold in the market.

According to the chart above its clear that android 2.1(eclair) now leads the pack closely followed by android 1.5 (cupcake)

Like the UK general election, it looks like a 3 horse race between version 1.5, version 1.6 and the latest 2.1 model however unlike the election it seems that Android 2.1 will win out.  The breakdown will change soon drastically when the second most popular android handset, the htc hero, makes the jump to 2.1( eta before end of June) Hopefully we will be seeing some news soon regards the t-mobile g1 and the motorola dext regards proposed upgrades to Android version 2.0 to help those early android adopters get the most out of the latest android apps.
