Get your Swype tomorrow while you can

Submitted by on June 15, 2010 – 11:27 pmNo Comment

For those of you who weren’t lucky enough to try out Swype when it was available under beta a few months ago- you are in luck.  From tomorrow morning(16.6.2010 USA time) you Swype will be able to download the revolutionary keyboard for Android for FREE!

The Swype founders have let the cat out of the bag to Techcrunch‘s Michael Arrington and announced that from tomorrow morning everyone will be able to download it from http://beta.swype.com/

The revolutionary app

Phone with Swype Unlike Apple, who insists that all users should use its standard keyboard on the Iphone, Android has the ability for developers to customize almost everything including the keyboard.  Swype is revolutionary in that it allows a user to interact with a standard familiar keyboard but in a whole new way. Instead of tapping each key, you just need to drag your finger between each key to create a “swiping” motion. If you want to do a capital letter, just swype up above the keyboard and then carry on swyping the rest of the letters ( see image to right)

Most of the actual working out of what you are typing is done by a very clever computer algorithm that analyses the combinations of words that can be produced using the “Swipe” and contextually enters the correct one or if its not sure, will present you with options.

Swype=Speed

The accuracy is amazing and once you have got a handle on it, it is very quick. Swipe claims that its almost as fast as typing on a keyboard, which from my personal experience is a bit a of stretch, however it is very quick and is definitely an improvement over the existing Android keyboard.

To learn how to swype- check out the video below:

Although, Swype is not the only application to offer this ( check out shapewriter on the market), it is in my experience the best implementation of the technology.  Clearly the popularity of swype coupled with the uniqueness and ease of use has made it a great choice for manufacturers to bundle with their phones to make the user experience that much better.  These key success factors arise out of the openness of the Android platform and shows how Android is pushing the envelope when it comes to the smartphone revolution.

If you are interested in find out about using your voice to type and interact with your phone- be sure to check out my Vlingo Application showcase here.
