Yahoo readies its App armada to take the Android platform
Looks like Yahoo is finally joining the android party and creating apps for Android users. Just like London buses, when you wait long enough for one, three turn up at the same time! Yahoo has chosen today to unleash 3 android apps at the same time. This trifecta is made up of the Yahoo Search, Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger app.
Android users have been able to use existing apps to replicate a lot of this functionality already. The Meebo app has been able to connect to Yahoo messenger for several months and users have been able to use the awesome k9 mail app and the built in Google app to use.
Yahoo’s launch of these apps presents an extreme change in stance with the device, choosing originally to follow other platforms. The fact that companies like Yahoo are finally starting to produce apps for android clearly illustrates the high demand that the massively growing Android user base is beginning to show.
While this is a clear winner for Yahoo users on the platform, this could represent the new front when it comes to the search engine wars. Yahoo has already replaced Google as the default search engine on the Motorola Backflip phone released through AT&T in the USA. With its new app arsenal, it looks set to be able to offer more options for OEM
( Manufacturer) licensing and seek to become the default option on more handsets. Could it reach a stage where Google is taking the backseat in an operating system that it has orginated and developed? What is clear is that you should look for Yahoo to be coming soon to a phone near you.
Personally, for all those manufacturers out there, no one wants to have a particular search engine foist upon them, the best strategy is always to give people the options to choose which one they want best.
For Yahoo users, here are the features of the Yahoo Mail Android Application, which is available to download right now.
