Google’s Eric Schmidt has given an enlightening view of Google’s mobile strategy the UK Daily Telegraph. In his interview he advocates Google’s strategy as not being trying to “beat Apple” but to try something different.
He goes on to stress that Google’s tactic is and and always has been about being open in stark contrast to Apple’s tight fisted control.
The Google model is completely open. You can basically take the software – it’s free – you can modify whatever you want, you can add any kind of app, you can build any kind of business model on top of it and you can add any kind of hardware. The Apple model is the inverse.
Nexus One was about moving the platform forward
The most interesting thing for me on the interview was the fact that he says there is unlikely to be a nexus two and the only reason the nexus one was created was to push the platform forward.
The term “reality distortion field” gets tossed around a lot when it comes to mobiles, some saying that Eric is only trying to make light of the fact that the nexus has been a total failure. Personally having used the phone, I seriously disagree. It was the first handset that truly earned the term ” Iphone Killer” as it bested the iphone on arguably every score point. The phone has also sparked a multitude of offshoots from it, in particular the HTC Desire the Samsung Galaxy and even to a degree the smaller form factor HTC Wildfire. All of these phones are built around the hardware reference model that is the Nexus One.
In terms of pushing the platform to the next level and introducing many new users to the Android platform. I suggest that the Nexus has been a resounding success and is clearly a case of job done.
The Nexus One still has a few more secrets that it will expose over the next few months, such as the radio transmitter, HD Audio support and of course the coloured LED notification. I suggest that the influence that is has had on the market has already been profound and is set to continue on ( hopefully towards Android 3.0)
