How to update your UK Nexus One to latest Android 2.2 (Froyo) manually- updated!
( Edit: The following procedure is from the USA version- although its not confirmed if there will be a separate UK version– the version below does have United Kingdom as a language option and works brilliantly. and will work as long as you aren’t running the Vodafone firmware version EPF21b – click settings – about phone to find out. )
Update: 6/7/2010: I have include the latest firmware versions, just repeat the actions below to update to the latest
As with all the Android updates its better to wait for the OTA (over the air) update which will come. If you absolutely, positively, impossibility to wait a single second longer to enjoy the amazing new features on the Android 2.2 ( Froyo) release, then follow the instructions below. Be forewarned that you can risk rendering your device unusable so its entirely at your own risk.
Ok scary language is over – now on with the update:
I have successfully used the following method to update my Google Nexus One to Froyo:
Update Preparation
- Make sure you have a Google Nexus One as this probably won’t work for others
- Make sure you have a lot of charge on your phone as if it loses power during this process you may have a dead handset on your hands
- Download the following files available on the Rapidshare linklist
- Use a file manager app ( like the awesome Astro file manager ) to copy the files into the root of your sd card. ( alternatively plug it into your computer and mount your phone as a USB device) .
- If the file is not labelled as update.zip then use your file manager to rename the first file “signed-passion-FRF83-from-FRF50.38d66b26.zip” to update.zip
- Make sure you have backed up your stuff from your phone (use the excellent sprite backup application to do this)
- Double check you have read the warning at the top that its risky and its better to wait for the update.
- Make sure you have REALLY backed up all your stuff from your phone (see point 3)
Update instructions.
- Make sure you have done the preparation above.
- Power down the device and disconnect any cables.
- Press the power key and Volume down key together until you see a while menu with skating android guys on it.( image on the right)
- Press volume down to move the selection to the recovery option
- Press Power to select recovery
- Machine will reboot and display and Android with a large Triangle Warning ( image below)
- Press Power and Volume Up Button together until you see a blue menu pop up (image on right)
- Use the rollerball to select “apply sdcard-update.zip”
- The next step is really important
- Once you click the rollerball to select update- Do not touch anything further. Just put the phone down and go watch some tv or something. Do not sit and stare at the screen as you will be tempted to touch. Seriously put it down and don’t touch it.
- After coming back you will see that your device has booted into the next android 2.2 interface. Enjoy!
- Delete the update.zip file and repeat the process above with the remaining 2 files on the Rapidshare download link list to bring the software up to the latest version.
Please let me know if you have managed to get it working like I did and please feel free to share your personal likes and dislikes about Froyo.
There have been 3 subsequent releases of froyo, which if you want to download and install, just use the above procedure. ( although its better if you wait for the update to come through over the air. )

Working for me, nice and straight forward.
Sadly Seesmic Twitter app gives me a “Connection Error” message and im unable to view or send Tweets – Luckily the official twitter app is working nicely.
Did the update last night at about 10.30 with quite alot of red wine onboard…lol needless to say worked like a charm, but a very nervous period sat wayching it.
Got a couple of glitches specifically my floating green clock when using the desk dock does not work. but hey ho aprt from that it flies.
UK model EPF21b from vodafone
This update doesn’t work.
failed at step 4. same error message as when trying to update from other ‘non-uk’ updates.
getting following error message:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
It looks like there is a second version for uk. Is there anything specific to vodafone on it?
nothing obvious that I can see. no vodafone apps, no vodafone branding when powering up etc.
Ive just checked the forum on their website which confirms the phone comes unbranded and unlocked.
Been trying togetthis running all weekend – lookss I’ll just need to wait for OTA whenever that comes.
am from the Philippines i downloaded last night on my stock N1 and am loving it… but i cant figure out how to move applications to the sd card the move on sd card button cant be pressed, anyone can help?
* if you download on windows OS, rename the file just “update”.
* after the the exclamation mark with the android just press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons( i counted 3 seconds before releasing, be patient here)
i hope updating now wont have any bad effect on my N1 because am NOT from the US… ty
some applications suddenly were not working well like handcent and HTC_IME is that normal? ty
Worked like a dream on mine. Got my N1 shipped to the UK from Google. Only issue was just a couple of apps didn’t work properly. Solved by just updating them…
I think you should change the tittle of this post as it appears to me that this will not work with a VODA UK version, which runs ERE21B firmware, as opposed to the USA/World model which runs ERE27.
It looks like you can flash ERE27 first, then follow your instructions above, but doing so will void the Voda warranty as you have to root your phone first.
Kev
Thanks for that agree. Will modify it later today
Have unlocked and rooted my original ERE21B firmware from VF UK and used the recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1.img recovery tool to apply the FRF50 signed update and my phone is stuck on the Google X logo on boot up. Should it take this long?
Have I fried my lovely Nexus 1 never to be used again and with no Warranty?!?!?!
Any help, much appreciated!
Scratch that! FRF50 now up and running on my VF UK nexus 1
I had to wipe the system restore, apply the ERD79 stock image from the XDA forum, THEN update using the full FRF50 image…
And it’s so much faster! Well worth it!
It seems to be working so far for me but i was wondering how long it roughly takes. It rebooted back into recovery and is saying formatting cache… is this normal. Has been on this screen for about 5 mins. Don’t want to touch it just in case
Hi i am living in India and i have a Google Nexus One with Build EPF21B.I was desperately trying to update my Nexus One to Froyo.
But unfortunately the Rapidshare link you have provided says that the file is not available and needs to be re-uploaded by the uploader as it has crossed the 10 times download limit. Can you please upload it once again and provide me the link.
Thanks in advance.
could not find root of the sd card
The root is the base folder where all the other folders are stored. Its usually called sdcard
Works like a charm! Sweet!
Updated from an unlocked N1 with Android 2.1 build ERE27…
Thank you for this tutorial. Nice work!
