Offical: HTC Desire getting out Froyo this weekend
HTC have finally given HTC Desire fans in the UK the news they have been waiting for – Android 2.2 is going to be hitting phones from this weekend! For those of you who don’t know what Android 2.2 is check out our launch centre here.
I am really glad to see that HTC are really sitting up and listening to their users and realising that when it comes to Android – updates are really important for customers ( do you agree??- comment below)
Since Android 2.2 has been out for a while already on the Nexus one, it seems that HTC were busy adding some great new features to sweeten up their flavour of froyo. They have added :
- Itunes sync – This is massive- but how long will it last? Hopefully Apple won’t be spoilsports and break it with the next release
- 720p HD Video recording- Massively demanded Iphone 4 feature is coming home to android!
- Improved Caller ID- Looking forward to seeing what improvements have been made.
- App sharing widget- This is already available on the HTC Wildfire and allows you to share app recommendations via email, twitter and Facebook.
The roll out to unlocked phones will start this weekend, however if your phone was supplied by a network, it may take a bit more extra time to roll out after testing. What is clear is that it is definitely something worth waiting for. Nice job HTC- other manufacturers step on the gas, we want to see your Android 2.2 updates soon!
Here is the official statement sent to us in full:
The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense. The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC’s App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, though the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won’t delete any of the phone’s content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a WiFi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.
This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks’ time.

Whooo and indeed hooo
This is fab news. Thanks for the tweet alert. I am on 02 so I hope I don’t have to wait too long.
And yes, of course being able to get updates is important. I would never have been bought my HTC Desire if I hadn’t thought I would have been able to update it.
I’m on the Wildfire with three.. just wishing I had froyo already!
Well, we’re already into Sunday with no FroYo and as far as I can tell from online, noone anywhere has got the official OTA update yet. Maybe there’s a bit of a delay. Better bloody hurry up. N1 users have had it ages now.
