Sony goes Large with Xperia S
Sony has gone monster with the new Sony Xperia S
Only a few more weeks to go until Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where we are expecting some amazing new hardware from android. Top of the list is Sony forgoing a long pretty title for the succinctly titled Sony Xperia S. Despite its short moniker, its really long on specs including:
- 12 Megapixel with Exmor(for low light pictures)- consigning that digital camera firmly into the drawer
- Plenty on motoring muscle in the form of a 1.5Ghz dual core processor
- Massive 4.3 inch reality display screen to show off that power and amazing pictures in crisp, clear screen.
- Front facing 1.3mp pixel for video conferencing and looking if you hair looks good.
The phone is the first in the crop of the new generation NXT phones and Sony seem to have taken a leaf out of the book of HTC, by offering its own unique design ethos called “iconic identity” and wow does it look great!
Good News Bad News
The phone is sure to be a knockout blow barring one major flaw in the form of software. When its released in the next two months it will still be shipping with Android 2.3.x aka Gingerbread. Although it is scheduled to be upgraded in second half 2012, to the new android 4.0, its a long time to wait for a spanking new high end phone to get the latest that Android can offer.
Smart Extras
One of the other key points that Sony is hammering home and seems to be a genuinely useful innovation is the inclusion of NFC “Smart Tag Support”. These appear to be a set of predefined profiles which when tapped will automatically trigger certain profiles. Eg. Tap the alarm clock profile when you get home next to your bed and it will go into “Alarm clock” aka night mode. – Great!
There were also a a couple of other announcements such as a new bluetooth headset and a smart watch however I will reserve my thoughts on those until I actually have had a go at them.
Look out for the Xperia S hitting uk shores in March.
